U.S. Dec. leading indicators rise 0.2%

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- U.S. economic prospects brightened in December, as the index of leading economic indicators increased by 0.2 percent as expected, the second straight gain after five months of decline, the Conference Board reported Thursday.
The behavior of the index, designed to forecast economic trends six to nine months ahead, "is consistent with the economy continuing to expand in the near term, but more slowly than its long-term trend line," the Conference Board said.
Four of the 10 leading indicators advanced in December: consumer expectations, stock prices, money supply and jobless claims.
The coincident index increased 0.3 percent, while the lagging index was unchanged.
