Transmeta Shares Off as Firm Mulls Exit From Making Chips

A Wall Street Journal Online News Roundup

NEW YORK -- Transmeta Corp. (TMTA) said it is mulling an exit from its core business of building and selling microprocessors to instead focus on licensing its intellectual property. The company's shares fell more than 20% on the news.

At about 12:20 p.m. EST on the Nasdaq Stock Market, shares of Transmeta were down 35 cents, or 24%, at $1.11.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company, which was founded in 1995 to specialize in energy-efficient chips for portable computers, said it is conducting a "critical evaluation" of the economics of its current business model.

Transmeta has hired investment bank Perseus Group LLC to review options for its chip-making business. The company said it is "actively engaged" in discussions regarding strategic alliances "to increase shareholder value."

Instead of making chips, the company said it will increase its focus on the licensing of its intellectual property in 2005. It has licensed its technology to NEC Electronics Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd.

"By modifying our business model to focus more on our licensing opportunities, leveraging our substantial IP portfolio and our R&D capabilities, we would expect to reduce our cash needs substantially and to improve our results for our shareholders," said Transmeta Chief Executive Matthew Perry in prepared remarks.

The company said it expects to complete its business review this month and hold a conference call to discuss its plans with inventors on Jan. 21.

Based on the prospect of it siphoning off sales from the likes of Intel Corp. (INTC), the company saw its share price more than double the day of its market debut in November 2000 to $45.25 from $21. But Transmeta has struggled to sell its low-power chips.

Eu entrei a 1 com uma pequena porção, porque acho que a queda é demasiada para a notícia e à espera de um ressalto ( sim eu sei que n se deve apanhar facas em queda à espera de ressaltos).
