U.S. Dec. Empire State index rises to 29.9

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Manufacturing activity in the New York area expanded in December, the New York Federal Reserve Bank said Wednesday.
The bank's Empire State Manufacturing index rose to 29.9 in December from a revised 18.9 in November.
The gain was unexpected.
The consensus forecast of Wall Street economists was for the index to slip to 19.6 from the initial estimate of 19.8 in November.
New orders jumped to 40.1 in December from 16.9 in November.
The employment index rose to 21.9 from 10.6 in November.
