GOLDEN, CO--(MARKET WIRE)--Jun 18, 2004 -- AXcess News (www.axcessnews.com) published a story covering a new handheld home security instrument that detects explosives and other elements through the use of neutron signals.
Friday, Isonics Corporation (NasdaqSC:ISON - News) announced that it was funding the research and development of its NeutroTest handheld explosives detection instrument that is to be conducted by IUT-Berlin. Isonics said that it expected to have NeutroTest on the market by the first quarter of 2005.

In an exclusive interview, Isonics' President, James Alexander, said that the market for Isonics NeutroTest handheld instrument was difficult to estimate but it could reach $100 million.
According to Homeland Security Research President, Johnathan Tal, "The homeland security people screening market is expected to grow to over 15 times its current size over the next ten years."
Tal went on to quote a recent Report released by his San Jose CA-based homeland security research firm, saying that sales of $590 million in 2001 are forecast to reach $3.5 billion by 2006 and $9.9 billion in 2010.
Tal's company is the first research firm in the US dedicated solely to homeland security research.
Isonics' NeutroTest device holds data from a prior scan and compares it to the signal of the package being scanned to give the user an accurate reading as to whether there are explosives. Due to its ability to penetrate any device, the NeutroTest instrument is capable of detecting a host of elements -- not just explosives.
Neutrons, which are molecules created naturally by the sun, can penetrate any object. Isonics NeutroTest handheld device creates neutrons that are aimed at the object in question, penetrating the material and reading that signal. It then compares that signal to a prior scan and returns positive or negative results. Isonics is the first homeland security business to develop a neutron-based detection device.
