Although the market is gyrating today, this hasn't been a grueling session... just a cautious one. I think that the most intriguing action is in the shares of Applied Materials, which is only off $0.17 so far today. Don't let the unchanged share price fool you, as there is an incredible battle brewing beneath the surface of this stock. We had a hunch that the company would post a blowout quarter; although, we weren't sure about their guidance. Considering that the universal assessment of the guidance is that it was an unequivocal disaster, the big question is whether that guidance marks an inflection point for the company and the industry. As we ponder that question, understand that Intel made rather upbeat comments on the industry's prospects. We have been long Applied Materials for several months, and we think that now would be the worst time to exit the stock. Moreover, a break through above $17.80 would be a monumental move, and probably trigger an additional rally to $21.00. The fact that the share price of AMAT has crawled back today speaks volumes for the upside potential of the industry and this stock in particular.
I think that the action in the semiconductors will tell us a lot about how forgiving investors will be going into the end of the year. The mindset of the market is very important as this rally becomes extended and heavy. "
