Jobless Claims Fall in Latest Week
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new jobless claims fell a sharp 29,000 last week, the government said on Thursday, but remained stubbornly high, reflecting persistent weakness in the labor market.
New claims for state unemployment insurance benefits for the July 12 week dropped to 412,000 from a revised 441,000 in the prior week, the Labor Department said. Analysts were expecting 425,000 new claims, well below the 439,000 originally reported for the prior week.
A department spokesman said the decrease reflected difficulties in adjusting for seasonal shutdowns in the automobile, textile and apparel industries.
