Nokia Warns of Lower Profits, Shares Fall

HELSINKI (Reuters) - The world's top cellphone maker Nokia posted lower second quarter earnings on Thursday and warned a weaker dollar would hit sales and earnings at its main mobile phone unit in the third quarter, sending its shares spiralling down.
"Sales of Nokia mobile phones in the third quarter are expected to be flat or slightly down year-on-year, largely due to a major depreciation of the U.S. dollar compared with the same period in 2002," Nokia said in a statement.
The firm forecast pro forma earnings of 0.15-0.17 euros per share in the third quarter versus 0.18 euros a year earlier.
The comments confirm the mobile phone sector is still grappling with slow growth due to flagging demand, with Nokia's reiterated forecast of 10 percent industry growth now based on hopes for the seasonal uptick in sales at Christmas.
Nokia shares slid 6.7 percent to 14.69 euros on the result, knocking the stock into the red for 2003 and pushing the Dow Jones Stoxx Tech index two percent lower.
Second-quarter pro forma earnings per share at the firm fell to 0.14 euros, flat on expectations in a Reuters poll and down from 0.19 euros a year ago due to a restructuring charge at Nokia Networks, the smaller of the firm's two main divisions.
Nokia's result comes after U.S. rival Motorola on Tuesday posted weaker second-quarter sales and reeled in financial forecasts in the face of tough competition in China. Networks rival Ericsson of Sweden will report earnings on Friday.
