Blair defeats rebels


Prime Minister Tony Blair faced down the rebels in his own party who challenged the government's decision to go to war against Iraq.


A rebel amendment that case for war has not yet been established was defeated by 396 votes to 217, a government majority of 179. Up to 139 Labour MPs voted for the rebel amendment, according to its sponsors.
A government motion backing military action was then carried by 412 votes to 149, a majority of 263.
