NEW YORK, May 19 (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures pointed higher on Friday, suggesting the Nasdaq index may snap its longest losing streak in 12 years, with Dell Inc. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. poised to boost the technology sector.
Shares of Dell jumped 5.2 percent after the closing bell on Thursday after the computer maker posted earnings in line with expectations. For details, see [ID:nN18307299]
Advanced Micro Devices surged 14.2 percent after the bell after the chip maker said Dell would offer its processors in Dell servers by year end.
"We've definitely gotten to the point where we're oversold," said Barry Ritholtz, fund manager at Ritholtz Capital Partners. "AMD is clearly going to set the tone for the Nasdaq even though its on the NYSE."
The Nasdaq has fallen for the past eight sessions, making it the longest losing streak since September 1994.
S&P 500 futures were up 5.3 points, above fair value, a mathematical formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract.
Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 40 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures were up 8.5 points.
Dell's stock rose $1.25 to $25.20 on the electronic brokerage network Inet from a close of $23.95 on the Nasdaq.
AMD shares climbed to $35.79 on Inet from a close of $31.35 on the New York Stock Exchange.
Shares of Merck & Co. may get a boost after the drug maker won unanimous support from U.S. advisers on Thursday for the first vaccine to protect young women and girls from a sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer. [nN18398920]
On Thursday, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 77.32 points, or 0.69 percent, to end at 11,128.29. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 8.51 points, or 0.67 percent, to finish at 1,261.81. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 15.48 points, or 0.70 percent, to close at 2,180.32.
