WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. consumer sentiment improved again in early December, but remained below levels seen in the early summer before gasoline prices moved higher.

The University of Michigan's preliminary consumer sentiment index rose to 88.7 in December from 81.6 in November, according to published reports of the proprietary research. It's the highest since August's 89.1

The index bottomed at 74.2 in September after devastating hurricanes. It reached 96.5 in July.

The expectations index jumped to 77.3 from 69.6. It's the highest since July.

The current conditions index improved to 106.6 from 100.2. It's the highest since August.

The future outlook index led the way, climbing to 77.3 from 69.6. The current conditions index rose to 106.6 from 100.2.

"The data are stronger than expected and could put some upward pressure on yields and the dollar," said analysts at Action Economics.

Treasurys were lower after the report.
