WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Manufacturing activity in the New York area declined for the third straight month in Octobe
The bank's Empire State Manufacturing index fell to 12.1 in October from a revised 15.6 in September.
The decline was unexpected. Economists were expecting the index to rise to 18 from the initial estimate last month of 17.0.
Readings above zero indicate expansion.
Despite the decline, new orders bounced back after a sharp decline in September.
The new orders index rose to 24.9 in October from 11.6 in the previous month.
The prices paid index rose again in October and is near record highs set late last year.
Prices paid rose to 57.3 in October from 53.9 in September.
Shipments fell slightly to 23.5 in October from 29.7 in the previous month.
Unfilled orders increased to 0.4 from -9.8 in September.
Inventories increased to 4.2 in October from -6.7 in the previous month.
The employee index inched lower to 9.3 in October from 11.7 in September.
The outlook for the next six months was less optimistic. The future general business conditions index fell to 32.6 from 38.1 in September.
