the statement reads as follows:

"Committee believes that, even after this action, the stance of monetary policy remains accommodative and, coupled with robust underlying growth in productivity, is providing ongoing support to economic activity. Output appears to be growing at a moderate pace despite the earlier rise in energy prices, and labor market conditions continue to improve gradually. Inflation and longer-term inflation expectations remain well contained. The Committee perceives the upside and downside risks to the attainment of both sustainable growth and price stability for the next few quarters to be roughly equal. With underlying inflation expected to be relatively low, the Committee believes that policy accommodation can be removed at a pace that is likely to be measured. Nonetheless, the Committee will respond to changes in economic prospects as needed to fulfill its obligation to maintain price stability."

Fed raises U.S. rates for fifth time this year

14/12/2004 19:26

WASHINGTON, Dec 14 (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve raised U.S. interest rates on Tuesday by a quarter-percentage point for the fifth time this year and said it will keep gradually lifting them from rock-bottom levels to forestall inflation.

The unanimous and widely expected decision by the central bank's policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee moves the benchmark federal funds rate -- which affects credit costs throughout the economy -- to 2.25 percent from 2 percent.

The Fed began to lift rates in June from a 1958 low of 1 percent and is poised to move them higher still as long as the economy continues its steady march forward.

A few analysts had wondered whether the Fed would warn about a heightened risk of upward price pressures, but the central bank said risks to the economy remained balanced between inflation and renewed weakness. [FOMC decision: FF target +25 BPs to 2.25%, keeps 'measured'] and says
risks are still roughly equal. Vote 12-0. Also, DR upped 25 BPs on
requests from all 12 districts. Statement is remarkably similar to Nov.
-
On inflation: Same language as in Nov, "Inflation and longer-term
inflation expectations remain well contained." Labor mkt conditions
"continue to improve gradually." Mentions need for price stability.
-
Fed says full FOMC minutes to be accelerated to 3 wks after meetings.
Minutes are next due at 2pm on Jan 4.
