S&P 500 Declines as U.S. Energy Stocks Drop, Led by Exxon
Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell, led by energy stocks including Exxon Mobil Corp., as a decline in oil prices to a three-month low threatened to reduce the companies' profit growth.

Colgate-Palmolive Co. gained, limiting the benchmark's losses, after the world's biggest toothpaste maker announced plans to cut jobs.

The S&P 500 dropped 5.92 or 0.5 percent, to 1184.33 as of 1:29 p.m. in New York. Johnson & Johnson dragged the Dow Jones Industrial Average lower after following a report the company may buy Guidant Corp. The Dow average declined 44.78, or 0.4 percent, to 10,502.28.

The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 11.42, or 0.5 percent, to 2139.83.

About three stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Some 637.1 million shares changed hands on the Big Board, 2.2 percent more than the same time a week ago.

Crude oil for January delivery fell 3 percent to $41.65 a barrel in New York on speculation that warm weather and increased refinery production have bolstered U.S. heating-oil stockpiles. Futures touched $41.91, the lowest since Aug. 31. Oil has declined 25 percent from a record of $55.67 on Oct. 25.

Reflecting the drop in oil futures, an index of 27 energy companies slid 1.2 percent for the worst performance among the S&P 500's 24 industry groups.

Exxon, whose chemicals business reported record third- quarter profit because of surging oil prices, lost 49 cents to $49.65. ChevronTexaco Corp., the No. 2 U.S. oil company, declined 43 cents to $52.38. ConocoPhillips, the largest U.S. refiner, declined $1.27 to $85.33.

Colgate-Palmolive rose $2.74 to $49.03. The world's biggest toothpaste maker plans to cut about 12 percent of its workforce as part of a four-year restructuring program. Colgate said the job cuts will help save about $250 million to $300 million by the fourth year.
